Why Sunflowers

Just saying their name makes people smile – Sunflowers. It could be their bright yellow petals surrounding a large colorful disk or the way the young flowers naturally follow the sun throughout the day as they grow into the sky or it could be how the bees love them. Whatever your reason for loving sunflowers, we have to admit that sunflowers are one of our favorite flowers here at Dalton Farms. We love them so much that we picked sunflowers for the very first flower we planted when we started our Flower Festivals. And judging from the responses from people who have visited the farm over the years, it is one of their favorites also.

Festival of Sunflowers

What should you expect to do or see when you visit the farm?

Sunflowers are the star of the festival, but there are so many other things to see and do during your visit to the farm. You can spend an hour or the entire day and not be bored with either choice.

When you enter the farm, the rows and rows of sunflowers greet you. We’ve planted about a million seeds in a number of different kinds in the past. This year will be no exception; we’ll have plenty of flowers to enjoy every weekend we’re open.

Take photos of the many varieties of sunflowers or capture pictures of your loved ones. Throughout the fields we have hidden photo stations. Take a picture in front of one of our many colored doors, butterfly wings or Dalton Farms picture frames.

On weekends you can enjoy music from local artists, food from local eateries and if you’re lucky a wine tasting or two. Some weekends you might enjoy a paddle boat ride on our lake, but we also have bikes and swings to enjoy all week long.

Enjoy a little bit of farm life. There are chickens and goats to see. They are crazy creatures that entertain the young ones in your party.

This year, enjoy a Two Bridges event and our second annual Oktoberfest celebration.

PLUS…

Pick the flowers you love. You have the opportunity to take home the beauty you see on our farm and put it in your home. With care sunflowers will last and bring you joy we see everyday on the farm. Pick one or a couple dozen.

Random Acts of Fabrication has created amazing metal sculptures of beautiful sunflowers that you can purchase to display in  your yard. These are well crafted and will last years.

The Flower That Started It All

With the hope of keeping the farm within the family, Keith Dalton started the purchase of the farm from his grandfather in 2012. Keith wasn’t sure if he would continue what his Grandfather started by utilizing the property to cultivate produce since small local. So he teamed up with  Chris Viereck and they came up with the idea of converting the farm into a tourist destination. They pictured Dalton Farms as a place where visitors could come to learn about the farm, its history, enjoy music, food and drink. They could also enjoy strolling amongst acres of beautiful flowers that visitors could pick and bring home to enjoy.

The dream became reality in 2019, Dalton Farms opened to the public for the very first time with sunflowers as their star attraction.

The sunflower fields have become a must-see for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can pick their own sunflowers, take a paddle boat onto our peaceful lake, listen to local musical performances, enjoy  wine, beer, and food while they’re at the farm.

Visitors are welcome to come explore during our various festivals. So next time you’re looking for a fun day out during the fall months, come on down to Dalton Farms and see our sunflowers in all their glory!

Did You Know?

Sunflowers have been around for centuries. They are native to North and South America but because of their popularity, sunflowers can be seen growing all over the globe. Native Americans were the first to grow sunflowers for their food value – the seeds are versatile in usage including everything from cooking oil to a  delicious snack all by themselves. Later sunflowers became popular as a decorative flower.

What Others Say About Dalton Farms

Celebration of the Flower That Follows the Sun

Name

Sunflowers got their name because young sunflowers move to face the sun throughout the day! Their scientific name is helianthus which comes from the Greek word for ‘sun’ which is ‘helios’ and ‘flower’ which is ‘anthus.’

Symbolism

Sunflowers are a symbol of loyalty. This is rooted in the myth of Clytie and Apollo, which tells of steadfastness and devotion. Clytie was a water-nymph and in love with Apollo the sun god, who didn’t return her affections. So she pined away, sitting all day long upon the cold ground. For nine days she sat and tasted neither food nor drink, her own tears and the chilly dew, her only food. She gazed on the sun when he rose, and as he passed through his daily course to his setting; she saw no other object, her face turned constantly on him. At last, they say, her limbs rooted in the ground, her face became a sunflower, which turns on its stem so as always to face the sun throughout its daily course.

But the sunflower means different things to different cultures. In China, sunflowers are associated with long life, vitality, and good fortune. Native Americans regarded sunflowers as symbols of harvest and prosperity to them.

Fun Fact

A well known painting by Vincent Van Gogh has sunflowers as its subject. He painted them in Arles, southern France, in 1888 and 1891. He painted five large canvases with sunflowers in a vase, each one different from the others but all using the same shade of yellow. He wanted to show that it was possible to produce an image with many different variations of one color, without losing its beauty.

Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers

Sunflowers can mean many things to many people.

They brightened our day and gave pleasure to others, in our opinion. We enjoy seeing the smiles on people's faces when they come visit Dalton Farms with us. Each smile, like the sunflowers, adds warmth and happiness to those who are near it. Enjoy your visit with us.
